About Joining the Lab

The Mi3 Lab is always looking for motivated students and researchers who are passionate about machine intelligence, computer vision, robotics, and human-computer interaction. We value creativity, collaboration, and a commitment to impactful research.

Visiting Researchers

We welcome visiting researchers and scholars from other institutions for short-term or long-term stays. Our lab has hosted visiting students and researchers from institutions including TU Munich, Aalborg University, BITS Pilani, UC Berkeley, and UC San Diego. Visiting researchers are expected to be self-funded. If you are interested in visiting, please reach out with your CV and a brief description of your research interests.

Graduate Students

We are recruiting PhD and MS students interested in:

  • Artificial Intelligence and Computer Vision
  • Multimodal Machine Learning
  • Autonomous Vehicles and Robotics
  • Human-Robot Interaction
  • Vision-Language Models and Explainable AI

We are not currently recruiting PhD students who require funding from the lab. We are happy to welcome MS students and PhD students who bring their own external fellowship or funding. If this describes you, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Prospective graduate students should apply through the UC Merced Graduate Division to the Computer Science and Engineering or Electrical Engineering and Computer Science programs.

Undergraduate Students

UC Merced undergraduates interested in research opportunities should have:

  • Strong programming skills (Python, C++, or similar)
  • Coursework in machine learning, computer vision, or related areas
  • Enthusiasm for learning and tackling challenging problems
  • Ability to commit to at least 10 hours per week

Please also note the following expectations for undergraduate researchers in the Mi3 Lab:

  • Minimum one-year commitment. We invest significantly in onboarding and mentorship, and ask that undergraduate researchers plan to stay with the lab for at least one full year.
  • Enrollment in research units. Undergraduate researchers are expected to enroll in research credit units (CSE 195 or equivalent) while working in the lab.
  • Strong academic standing. We look for students with a stellar academic record — ideally all A's in their most recent semester. We understand that circumstances vary and may make rare exceptions, but academic performance is an important signal of readiness for research-level work.
  • Transcript required. Please include an unofficial transcript with your application email.

We receive a high volume of undergraduate inquiry emails each semester and may not be able to reply to all of them. We appreciate your interest and encourage you to apply carefully and thoughtfully.
